Sounding the Call: Sustained International Education through a Model of Interpersonal Engagement

 Twenty-first century education mandates global awareness;
higher education institutions can contribute to this goal with
international study opportunities. Short-duration programs (about
two weeks) involving rigorous pre-travel curricula, interpersonal
engagement (involving students, professors, and hosts), and plans
for sharing lessons learned abroad on home campuses expand
global awareness and have the potential to transform lives. In this
article, we share lessons learned from a model developed through
a sustained, decade-long partnership between our university and
the country of South Africa.
Keywords: international education, interpersonal engagement approach, international partnership, cross-cultural dialogue, quality of curriculum, student access, institutional priorities, international settings.
